Montenegro’s gambling revenue soars, reaching €18 million in seven months

Montenegro’s revenue from gambling and games of chance reached approximately €18 million in the first seven months of the year, representing an 80% increase compared to the same period last year.

Spasoje Papić, Director of the Gambling Administration, revealed to Radio Crne Gore that the state earned €3.2 million in July alone. He hailed this as a testament to the effectiveness of government policies and mechanisms designed to boost budget revenues from gambling.

Papić highlighted the need for further improvements in creating a responsible gambling environment while enhancing revenue collection efforts. He expressed optimism that upcoming regulations will allow some of these funds to be directed towards public interest areas such as sports, education, social protection, and services for individuals with disabilities.

Acknowledging the risks associated with gambling, Papić stressed the importance of using gambling revenue for the benefit of the community.

In the past year, a government coordination body was established involving various sectors to address issues in the gambling sector. Papić emphasized the need for a collaborative approach involving government bodies, NGOs, and gambling operators.

The Gambling Administration plans to strengthen oversight and expand public awareness campaigns about the harms of gambling and signs of addiction. New initiatives are expected by the end of the year.

Operators are encouraged to promote responsible gambling through clear messaging and self-control tools and to offer support for those facing gambling problems.

Papić also noted the importance of continuously improving the responsible gambling environment and revenue collection. He is hopeful that the new gambling law will greatly enhance the sector’s functioning.
