EBRD and EIB provide €45 million loan to SMATSA for air navigation system upgrade
, NewsThe European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a €20 million ($20.9 million) loan to Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services (SMATSA) to upgrade its air navigation system. This loan will be complemented by a €25 million credit from the European Investment Bank (EIB), according to an EBRD statement.
The funds will be used to enhance SMATSA’s air navigation system to the latest version of TopSky ATC One, developed by Thales Air Systems. This advanced software will improve operational capabilities, maximize runway capacity, and reduce delays, ultimately optimizing air traffic management. Additionally, the upgrades will lower costs by minimizing penalties for delays and reducing maintenance expenses, as reported by Plutonlogistics.com.
The loan agreement was signed by Matteo Colangeli, EBRD Regional Director for the Western Balkans, and Predrag Jovanović, General Director of SMATSA.
“We are grateful to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for supporting this important project to improve SMATSA’s primary Air Traffic Management System. This investment will enhance the quality of services SMATSA provides and significantly contribute to operational efficiency. Capacity will be increased, and delays will be reduced, benefiting both airlines and passengers,” said Jovanović.
He added that the project aligns with the green agenda, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions and supporting the development of the workforce. To date, the EBRD has invested over €9.5 billion in 367 projects in Serbia, primarily in the private sector. The bank’s focus in Serbia includes supporting private sector competitiveness, transitioning to green energy, and promoting sustainable infrastructure, according to the statement.
