ACG’s new executive director vows to boost Montenegro’s aviation appeal

Roko Tolić, the newly appointed executive director of the Airport of Montenegro (ACG), has pledged to enhance the country’s aviation sector and reduce the number of Montenegrin citizens traveling to Tirana for flight connections.

In a recent press conference at Podgorica Airport, Tolić emphasized that improving Montenegro’s aviation accessibility is a top priority. He announced plans to make the country more attractive to airlines and to set ambitious goals for 2025. “We are currently in a competitive position between Dubrovnik and Tirana,” Tolić said. “Our goal is to change that dynamic, taking into account our company’s capabilities and the public interest.”

One of Tolić’s main concerns is the current trend of Montenegrins traveling to Tirana for flights due to a lack of options at home. He expressed his frustration over the fact that around 70,000 citizens are forced to seek connections in the Albanian capital. “This is a challenge I am committed to addressing,” he stated.

In response to Ryanair’s decision to cut most of its routes from Podgorica this winter, Tolić has scheduled a direct meeting with the airline’s management in Dublin. He remains optimistic about reversing this trend and potentially expanding future opportunities.

The new executive director also highlighted that ACG provides significant discounts to airlines each year and stressed the importance of continuing this support to enhance the Montenegrin economy. Alongside opening new routes, Tolić is focused on urgently improving airport infrastructure in Podgorica and Tivat before the next summer season. He acknowledged that while immediate changes are not feasible, continuous efforts are being made to improve conditions.

Tolić addressed concerns about potential changes related to airport concessions, stating that ACG is prepared to invest its own funds to improve services regardless of the concession decision. He emphasized the need for prompt action and expressed confidence in the company’s stability and development.

Regarding the workforce, Tolić reassured employees about the transition to a potential concessionaire, advocating for professionalism and responsibility. He commended the current team and expressed a commitment to signing a new Collective Agreement to further motivate staff.

Reflecting on the current record-breaking season with around one and a half million passengers, Tolić acknowledged the efforts of his colleagues and stressed the importance of preparing for the next season.

Tolić concluded by expressing optimism about working with the new Minister of Transport and anticipated positive outcomes for ACG’s future development.
